The Middelhoven Fund provides funding for students and researchers within the field of microbiology for an internship or study trip abroad. This gives them the opportunity to work with the top in the field of microbiology.
Who is eligible
A contribution from the Middelhoven Fund is specifically intended for students and staff active in the field of microbiology.
Maximum amount of funding
The contribution amounts to a maximum of € 500 per person per trip or € 1000 for a PhD-group trip.

The Middelhoven Fund was founded by Wout Middelhoven.
Wout was a passionate scientist and teacher. After studying Chemistry at Utrecht University, Wout was appointed a researcher at the Microbiology Laboratory in 1961. He worked on the degradation of the amino acid arginine in baker's yeast, on which he obtained his PhD and which won him the prestigious Kluyver Prize of the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology (KNVM) in 1965. Wout devoted his entire career to yeast research. He had collaborations with researchers all over the world, and was always keen on new discoveries. He discovered, researched and described in detail many new yeast species.
Wout was Biological Safety Officer for many years, and for this work he was awarded the silver medal of Wageningen University in 2000. In 1995, Wout set up the Middelhoven Fund with the aim of financially supporting microbiology students during their internships. In this way, he wanted to give something back to the university. Over 100 students have made use of the fund over the years.
At the age of 89, Wout Middelhoven passed away on 20 February 2025.
