The Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy group carries out research focusing on economic and institutional issues within the bio-economy, and teaches across a wide range of aspects related to the contribution of the bio-economy and the agricultural sector in particular to sustainable development. We are led by Justus Wesseler.

Education by Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy

The Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy group provides training on a wide range of interesting topics offered by experienced staff members, in the areas of economics and policies related to the bioeconomy, rural and regional development, institutional and organizational aspects, and quantitative economics. We offer courses at bachelor’s and master’s level as well as thesis opportunities and contribute to multiple study programmes.

Our objective is to create impact in science and in society by spreading research results to other researchers, policy makers, students and societal actors. We focus on developed countries, the EU more specifically, but our research is also directed towards economies in transition, like Eastern Europe and China and developing countries. We publish the results of our research in scientific journals, professional journals, scientific and popular books, and proceedings.

Chair Holder

Justus Wesseler is the chair holder of the Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy group. He graduated in agricultural, environmental and natural resource economics in Göttingen. His research is on the economics of biotechnology, value chains, and regulatory economics including issues related to coexistence. He focuses on the contribution of value chains to sustainability, and the impact of new technologies.
