Summary

Sport is known for its physical benefits, but participating in sports can also help people develop and use important life skills. This PhD research looked at the impact of community sports programs for adults who face challenges such as low income, homelessness, mental health problems, or social isolation. Through interviews, focus groups, and a Group Concept Mapping study with participants, coaches, coordinators, and social workers, we explored which skills people develop through sports activities and whether these skills are used in everyday life. Lastly, we investigated which elements of the program are necessary for its success. The findings show that these adults develop various life skills and use these skills in their daily lives. Examples include taking responsibility, being on time, showing empathy, dealing with emotions, leadership and teamwork. These changes were often made possible by a safe and encouraging atmosphere and by coaches who focus on personal growth rather than performance.
