Education of Genetics

Genetics offers education by teaching courses at the bachelor and master level of different study programs. In addition, they provide BSc- and MSc theses, research practices and internships.

Thesis

We offer many possibilities for high-level thesis projects for BSC and MSc students. For an overview of our research, you can look around at the research section of our website. When you are interested in a research project, you can contact the responsible person directly to discuss any thesis or internship opportunities.

Find us on Brightspace

Detailed information (incl. requirements) can be found on our Genetics Thesis & Internship Brightspace page. After enrolment, it will be directly added to the Programme section in Brightspace. On our Brightspace, you can find all information needed to do a thesis, a research practice or an internship.

Internship & Research practice

Are you an MSc student with an interest in understanding the complex behaviours of animals and their interactions with the environment? And are you looking for an internship or research practice opportunity? The Behavioural Ecology group offers several opportunities for internships and research practices and provides an overview of available and previous internship or research practice topics (see buttons below). On WUR Career Platform, you can find an overview of our available projects. You need to make an account to check our projects. If you found a topic of your interest, contact the contact person of the project. When you contact one of our staff members, please wait for their response, before contacting other staff members.

Our courses

The Laboratory of Genetics contributes to courses in various BSc and MSc study programmes at Wageningen University, including Biology, Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Molecular Life Sciences, Biotechnology, and Nutrition and Health. These courses are structured along two main learning lines: mechanistic genetics and evolutionary biology.

Mechanistic genetics

In these courses we focus on the (molecular) causes of genetic and phenotypic variation by studying mechanisms such as transcription and translation, recombination, and genetic editing.

  • How is genetic information translated into the phenotype of organisms?
  • Through what molecular mechanisms is genetic variation generated?
  • How can we edit the DNA of organisms, and what can we learn from doing so?

Evolutionary biology

In these courses students learn to understand and study evolutionary mechanisms such as adaptation, genetic drift, and multilevel selection.

  • Why do organisms behave the way they do?
  • What determines if populations of organisms can successfully adapt to their environment?
  • And can we predict evolutionary trajectories?

Below, an overview is given of all courses that are either coordinated by the Laboratory of Genetics or in which members of the Laboratory of Genetics make a significant contribution. Click on the course names for more information.
