Genetics

The Laboratory of Genetics, led by Bas Zwaan, studies genetic variation from the processes that produce it (mutation, recombination), to the factors and processes that have shaped its architecture in the past and determine its fate now and in the future. The genetic and evolutionary analysis of biodiversity requires a broad range of model species that span the major kingdoms. The Laboratory of Genetics uses computer simulations, and studies bacteria, fungi, insects and plants.

Research

Research

The interrelationship between genetics, heredity and evolution is the focus of research of the Laboratory of Genetics. Central is the study of genetic variation that ranges from the processes that produce it (mutation, recombination), to the factors that have shaped its architecture in the past, and to the factors and processes that determine its fate.

Education

Education

Education by Genetics

The Laboratory of Genetics contributes to courses in various BSc and MSc study programmes. These courses are structured along two main learning lines: mechanistic genetics and evolutionary biology. We also offer many possibilities for BSc and MSc students to participate within our research through thesis projects, research practices and internships.

Contributions
We cover an enormous range of research subjects from all over the world, from a traditional fermented beverage in Benin to fungi in the polar regions.

Chair Holder

Bas Zwaan is the chair of the Laboratory of Genetics. He has focused his research on ageing and lifespan, applying artificial selection and experimental evolution on multiple model species. Another focal point is evolutionary constraints. He has not only contributed to many research projects at Wageningen University & Research but has also cooperated in large-scale collaborative projects such as the Integrated research on DEvelopmental determinants of Aging and Longevity (IDEAL) project.
