About our education

The vision of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is to strike a delicate balance between the well-being of our planet with its diverse species and the needs of humanity for healthy food and environment. We tackle this global challenge partly by educating students and professionals to become responsible change makers for science and society.

Vision for education
In our new Vision for Education 2025 we express our ambition to educate students and professionals who are able to analyse to develop new knowledge, and to analyse and tackle challenges in our domain through their up-to-date scientific qualifications, with the aid of advanced skills.
To propel realization of this mission forward, three main directions have been identified, each focusing on a different aspect of education:
- Direction 1: Towards ownership for personal development
We put the student and their development central to our education. - Direction 2: Towards an inspiring learning community
We sketch the context in which learning takes place as a joint venture of the whole academic community. - Direction 3: Towards a curriculum in touch with the world around us
We aim for agility in the contents of our education, basing our curriculum on developments in science and society.

How WUR handles:
Education innovation
The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) is dedicated to fostering excellence in education. Our mission is to inspire and empower educators, cultivate dynamic learning environments both online and on campus, and collaborate in enhancing courses and curricula. With a focus on innovation and continuous improvement, TLC strives to enrich the educational experience for both students and faculty.
Open Education
With Open Education, WUR shares its high-quality educational practices and resources with everyone, independent of time, place, or cost. WUR encourages educators to share the educational materials that we develop for our students with the world.

Sustainability
WUR has been able to call itself the world's most sustainable university for eight years running according to the GreenMetric ranking. For this list, research is conducted worldwide on how scientific institutions handle energy, climate, waste, transport, water, biodiversity and infrastructure. Sustainability in education and research is also measured. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) play an important role in our education. They are not only integrated into a large part of our BSc and MSc programmes, but also in postgraduate and online education.
In addition, WUR has sustainable business operations. You can see this reflected, for example, in procurement policy, campus and buildings, and mobility. More information about this and the related stories and initiatives can be found on the Sustainable Business Operations page.
Boundary crossing
Boundary crossing competence is the ability to learn and work with others outside one’s own scientific domain, institute, culture, or context. It allows you to recognise, seek, appreciate and utilise tensions that arise when learning or working with “others”. It is regarded as one of the major competencies needed by future university graduates to respond better to emerging global challenges.
Although collaboration with others can be enriching, this does not happen automatically. Students need explicit support to use their differences positively. Consciously integrating Boundary crossing in education helps. More information and details can be found on the Boundary Crossing page.
Teacher of the year award
High quality education at Wageningen University is recognized by rewarding teachers involved with their students and their way of teaching, ever since 1981. Wageningen University therefore annually organizes the Teacher of the Year Award. Students can vote for their favourite teacher, after which our student jury choses the winner. The winning teacher and the nominees receive a grant they can spend on new education goals.
