Artificial Intelligence

We are a community of AI scientists that aspires to address global challenges in a responsible way. We advance AI methods and conduct use-inspired, applied research in close cooperation with domain experts in the environmental, social and life sciences. The Artificial Intelligence group is led by Ioannis Athanasiadis.
Research
The AI group focuses on use-inspired research, meaning we are driven both by fundamental curiosity and the potential for practical applications to solve real-world challenges. We work on advancing AI methods like knowledge engineering, machine learning and deep learning, while also looking closely at the ethical, legal and social implications of these technologies. After all, AI can be transformative, and sometimes disruptive, so it’s crucial to understand its impact. Our research creates value by developing new AI techniques that not only push the field forward, but also help tackle urgent societal problems — through close collaboration with data scientists, computer scientists, mathematicians and domain experts across Wageningen University & Research.

Education

Education by Artificial Intelligence
The Artificial Intelligence group contributes to a wide range of courses related to artificial intelligence and its responsible application on BSc, MSc and PhD level. We offer courses like Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Sensing and Perception. We also offer opportunities for a Master thesis project.
Publications & Projects
Although we are a relatively new chair group, we have already contributed to many notable research projects and publications. Our group is involved in several national and international grants, like AgrifoodTEF, PHENET, and LTER-LIFE.
Highlighted publications
- Adaptive fertilizer management for optimizing nitrogen use efficiency with constrained reinforcement learning
- An image synthesis framework for enhanced salmon louse larvae (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) detection in complex seawater conditions
- An Innovative Framework for Threshold Exceedance Forecasting in Timeseries Using Survival Analysis
