Bioprocess Engineering

Bioprocess Engineering teaches and develops innovative bio-based processes. Together with chair Rene Wijffels we work on a sustainable and healthy future by engineering efficient bioprocesses for high quality products. Bioprocess Engineering studies and develops photoautotrophic and heterotrophic production systems for biobased products, as well as high-quality processes for the production of biopharmaceuticals.

Education by this Chair Group
The education offered by Bioprocess Engineering focuses on design of biotechnological processes for production of pharmaceuticals, healthy food ingredients, bulk chemicals and biofuels. These bio-based products should be produced in a sustainable and economical way.
Publications & Projects
Our research area encompasses everything between substrate (eg. light, CO2, sugar, lignocellulose) and product (food, pharmaceuticals, fuels, platform chemicals). That includes pretreatment of substrates, bioconversion and downstream processing, all from lab to pilot scale. Drivers are high quality products and high efficiency conversions with high volumetric productivity.

Chair Holder
Rene Wijffels is the chair of Bioprocess Engineering. He is a leading figure in the field of biobased economy, with his research focusing primarily on the production of biomass and specific biomass ingredients using highly efficient bioprocesses. His work is dedicated to achieving high efficiencies and volumetric productivities in systems such as those utilising microalgae. In addition, Wijffels is the Scientific Director of AlgaePARC, WUR's dedicated pilot facility for research into sustainable algae production.
