Or be able to read the labels in the supermarket, ask where you can find something, or hold a conversation with your neighbours? Would you also like to learn more about Dutch customs and traditions? If so, our Basic Dutch 1 course is perfect for you.
Who is this course suitable for?
This course is geared towards international employees, PhD candidates and expats with little to no knowledge of the Dutch language and who are interested in learning the language for social purposes.
Admission requirements

From 0 to on the way to A1
You don't need any prior knowledge of Dutch for Basic Dutch 1. To be sure this course is suitable for your level and study goals, please contact us at into@wur.nl.
If you are a native German speaker, we offer you the option of immediately enrolling in Basic Dutch 2, provided you study chapters 1 through 5 of the course book beforehand.
This course will help you reach language level A1. Read more about the language levels (CEFR).
What will this course teach you?
Skills
Once you have completed the course, you will know:
- introduce yourself/someone else;
- tell someone where you are from;
- ask someone where they are from;
- spell your name, address and city;
- explain how you are doing and ask someone how they are doing;
- explain what you study and ask what someone else studies;
- talk about your hobbies;
- invite someone to do something;
- talk about what you like/don’t like;
- ask someone what they enjoy doing;
- talk about your family;
- describe someone’s personality and appearance;
- talk about your daily activities;
- ask for the time and tell someone the time;
- ask and explain what’s happening;
- make an appointment;
- hold a conversation in a shop;
- ask where something is and explain where people/things are;
- ask the price of a product.
Grammar
Once you have completed the course, you will know:
- numbers up to 100;
- the days of the week;
- the months of the year.
Learning grammar is secondary to developing good communication skills and a good vocabulary. Only the basics of grammar will be covered, such as sentence structure, present tense verb conjugation, negation, question structure and pronouns.
This course will also cover Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture.
The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.

This course is offered several times a year in two variants: the standard track and the fast track. In addition, we offer an Intensive Summer course Basic Dutch 1.

The course price does not include course materials.
The course consists of 14 lessons of 1.5 hours per week. You should also allow for 1 to 1.5 hours (standard track) or 2 to 3 hours (fast track) of self-study per week to reach the desired level. The maximum number of participants per group is 16.
If you register for an online course, you follow all classes online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace. If you choose a face-to-face course, all classes will take place at Wageningen Campus.

After having registered for this course, you will receive additional information about the course materials in due time.
You will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages if you attended at least 80% of the lessons. After completing Basic Dutch 1 you can register for Basic Dutch 2.
