Would you like to further expand your grammar and Dutch vocabulary? Then our Intermediate Dutch 1 course is perfect for you. After this course, you'll be able to speak the language in everyday situations and express your opinion or ask for advice. You'll also learn what's typically Dutch.

Who is this course suitable for?

Target group

The course is for PhD candidates, international employees, or expats who already have some prior knowledge of Dutch and who want to learn Dutch for social purposes at and outside the workplace.

Content and approach

From A1 to halfway to A2

You need prior knowledge of Dutch for this course. If you have completed Basic Dutch 2 or the Intensive summer course Basic Dutch 2, you can participate in Intermediate Dutch 1. You can also start if you have studied Dutch before, for example, in your own country. In that case, please send your telephone number to into@wur.nl so we can schedule an intake.

This course will help you reach language level A2. Read more about the language levels (CEFR).

Approach
You'll learn to communicate in Dutch. All skills are covered: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We'll focus on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and Dutch customs and traditions. Reading and writing will be done largely through independent study.

What will the course cover?

Skills

After this course you can:

  • Describe a city, village, or landscape;
  • Talk about the weather;
  • Talk about what you do on vacation;
  • Make a suggestion;
  • Ask for and give directions;
  • Talk about transportation;
  • Describe and evaluate food;
  • Understand a recipe;
  • Tell someone what to do;
  • Name quantities;
  • Talk about your home and furniture;
  • Compare things;
  • Name shapes;
  • Ask indirect questions.

Grammar

Grammar is always addressed in a communicative context and in functional situations.

Culture and history influence a country's language. Therefore, this course also addresses interesting and relevant aspects of Dutch culture and history. Knowledge of these topics makes it easier to understand Dutch people and their reactions.

The teacher uses Dutch as much as possible during the course.
