Content and approach
Groep studenten praat op een brug in Amsterdam

From on the way to A1 to A1

This course will help you reach language level A1. The main goal of this course is to learn to communicate in Dutch in simple, everyday situations.

After completing this course, you can continue learning Dutch with our Social Dutch 3 course (level: on the way to A2). Read more about the language levels (CEFR).

Approach
The emphasis is on oral communication, but reading, listening, and writing skills are also covered. Dutch is spoken as much as possible in class, with English as the supporting language. You'll also learn more about Dutch culture.

What will this course teach you?

Once you have completed the course, you will be able to:

  • ask about arrival and departure times;
  • ask where the bus stops;
  • book a trip;
  • make a hotel room reservation;
  • talk about your house;
  • ask for someone's address;
  • talk about things that happened in the past/past events;
  • talk about your holidays;
  • order in a café or restaurant;
  • make a reservation at a restaurant;
  • talk about (your favourite) food and drinks;
  • ask about clothing;
  • describe colours;
  • express your dissatisfaction about something;
  • make conversation in a store.

Grammar

Grammar is always discussed in a communicative context and in functional situations.

For example: When you learn to talk about things that happened in the past, you simultaneously learn about the voltooid tegenwoordige tijd because knowledge of this grammatical concept is relevant to clearly talk or write about the past.

This course will also cover Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture.

The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.
