Do you want to learn Spanish for a holiday or for your study or work? Did you take Spanish in school, but it has become a little rusty? Spanish 1 will quickly help you get back on track! The course focuses on practical skills and introduces you to Spanish culture. After the course Spanish 1, you can continue on to Spanish 2, 3 and 4.
Who is this course suitable for?
Spanish 1 is a beginners' course and is intended for anyone who has no knowledge of Spanish and wants to quickly acquire a solid foundation in the language. The maximum number of participants per group is 16.
Did you have Spanish as a subject in secondary school (HAVO/VWO) or have you gained knowledge of the Spanish language in some other way? If so, you may be able to start Spanish 2 straight away. You do have to complete an intake (free of charge). This consists of a short telephone conversation with the teacher. If you would like to book an intake, email your telephone number to into@wur.nl.
What will you learn?
From A0 to A1
This course will help you reach A1 language level. After completing this course, you will be able to:
- understand simple words, expressions, and sentences in Spanish;
- ask and answer simple, short questions;
- follow a simple conversation;
- write simple, short sentences about personal matters.
After completing this course, you can continue learning Spanish with our Spanish 2 course (level: on the way to A2). Read more about the language levels (CEFR).
What will the classes cover?
Skills
- Introducing yourself, talking about personal information and profession
- Expressing what you want to do
- Talking about your language skills
- Describing places and talking about the climate and weather
- Identifying objects
- Expressing needs, likes and interest; asking about tastes
- Asking about products, prices etc. in stores
- Talking about preferences, habits and expressing frequency
- Talking about appearance, character and personal relationships
- Asking and telling the time
- Asking for and giving information about food in bars/restaurants and talking about eating habits
Grammar
- Gender and definite articles (el, la, los, las) and indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas)
- The personal subject pronouns (yo, tú, él...)
- The present indicative tense (regular and some irregular verbs)
- Some uses of 'por', 'para' and 'porque' and uses of 'de' and 'con'
- Quantifiers (muy, mucho, bastante...)
- Question words
- Adjectives and the superlative
- Posesive pronouns (mi, tu, su…)
- Comparison (yo también/ yo tampoco…)
- Direct object pronouns

This course is offered annually in February, April/May and September/October.

The course consists of eight lessons of one hour and forty-five minutes each week. You should also allow for two to three hours of self-study per week to reach the desired level. The maximum number of participants per group is 16.

To receive a Wageningen in'to Languages certificate, a minimum attendance of 80% is required. A diagnostic test is optional.
