About Wageningen Writing Lab

The Wageningen Writing Lab helps students improve their academic writing skills. You are welcome with any writing questions, such as:
- You need help to define your research topic more precisely
- You doubt if the structure of your text flows logically.
- You want to improve your academic writing style.
- You need help meeting a deadline.
- You need help incorporating the lecturer’s feedback.
- You have got stuck and don’t know how to start writing again.
FAQ
Nothing. Consultations with a writing coach are free of charge.
A consultation lasts 45 minutes. You may visit five times per writing assignment (ten for BSc and MSc theses).
The meeting can take place either online or at the Wageningen Writing Lab. We are located in the Forum building, on the second floor (room 260). Enter through the main entrance of the library and walk straight ahead. You will see us sitting there.
You can come along at any stage of your writing process: whether you have yet to start or are already underway. The sooner you come, the more you will benefit.
Only BSc and MSc students can use the Writing Lab. Unfortunately, we are unable to assist PhD students.
We are not a correction service and therefore cannot correct your text for spelling mistakes, for example. Nor can we help you improve your English or Dutch language skills. For this, you can take a (paid) language course at Wageningen in'to Languages.
The library can help you with questions about searching for literature, citing sources and referencing. Finally, Student Training & Support is the place to improve your study skills, work on your (mental) well-being and discover your talents.

What does the Wageningen Writing Lab do for teachers?
Teaching students to write takes time. Fortunately, you can refer them to the Wageningen Writing Lab for extra writing guidance at any time, free of charge. We help students become better writers in one-on-one sessions. Our approach is based on two unique pillars:
- A student sits down with a peer coach: a fellow student who has been trained by us to be a writing coach and does this work as a part-time job. This makes the conversation accessible and equal.
- Our writing coaches work in a non-directive manner: by asking (Socratic) questions, they allow the student to experience for themselves how they can evaluate and improve their text and writing process. This not only improves the text (short-term gain), but also the writer (long-term gain).
The more students who know about the Writing Lab, the better. So feel free to take these suggestions to heart:
Share these slides about the Writing Lab in your class or presentation.
You can post this text about the Wageningen Writing Lab on Brightspace and in the course manual.
We would be happy to visit your class to give a 5-minute pitch about the Wageningen Writing Lab. Invite us using this form!
We would be happy to visit a staff meeting to explain how the Wageningen Writing Lab works. Invite us by sending an email to writinglab@wur.nl.
We are always happy to exchange ideas with teachers, study advisors and other student counsellors. This allows us to stay up to date with what is happening across the university in the field of academic writing education. We are also happy to contribute ideas on issues that you, as a teacher, may encounter when designing academic writing education, such as how to make effective use of the thesis ring. So please do not hesitate to contact us!
