Axis (building 118) on Wageningen Campus houses Wageningen Food & Biobased Research and the Chair Groups Agrotechnology & Food Sciences.
About Axis
Since 1950, the site of Axis has housed buildings for agricultural and food technology research. The building, whose white facade is extended by a long, open wall, was constructed in 1990. This design, conceived by Ruijssenaars Damstra architects, was intended to conceal an old brick section of the building. This section was later demolished.
The design is based on three components that converge like axes in a graph in a bright, central hall. This earned the building the name Axis, which also reflects the technological sciences it has always housed. Over the years, the building's layout has been regularly updated to accommodate the latest testing and laboratory facilities. A new section was added in 2023 to meet the growing need for research space.
About the name Axis
In mathematics, axes are the vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines that make up the quadrants of a plane. Similar to its mathematical equivalent, the Axis building also consists of three different components which are joined together: Axis X (formerly the Atrium building), Axis Y (formerly the Verbindingsgebouw) and Axis Z (formerly the Technotron building). Axis contains offices, teaching rooms, laboratories and experimental areas and houses Food & Biobased Research, the Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences, and the Centre for Biobased Economy.
Accessibility
You can only access the building with a WURcard.
