Biography
Laura Valk is a microbiome scientist and project lead with a strong interest in understanding how microbial communities influence environmental and human health. She obtained her PhD from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), where she studied enrichment cultures and investigated how environmental conditions shape microbial community composition, functionality, and metabolite production using a range of omics approaches. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral position in Denmark, focusing on microbial communities in wastewater treatment systems. Her research explored community structure, genetic potential through a range of omics approaches, and the metabolites produced by these microbial consortia. By integrating microbial ecology, multi-omics data, and metabolic profiling, she contributed to a deeper understanding of the functioning of complex microbial ecosystems.
Several years ago, Laura transitioned into her current role as a microbiome scientist and project lead. In this position, she bridges fundamental microbial ecology with applications in nutrition, health, and industry. Her research focuses on understanding the relationships between the microbiome, diet, and host health by integrating microbiology, multi-omics technologies, and advanced data analytics. In parallel, she works on the characterization of industrial microorganisms and their genetic potential, supporting the development of innovative fermentation processes and novel microbial solutions for industrial applications.
A key aspect of her current work is the development and optimization of advanced in vitro gut microbiome models. These systems enable a deeper understanding of microbial functionality and provide valuable insights into the interactions between diet, microorganisms, and the host. Laura has a particular interest in the small intestinal microbiome, an understudied yet highly important part of the human gut ecosystem that plays a critical role in nutrient processing and overall health.
