Biography

Biography

Dr. Sanne Raghoebar is an Assistant Professor in Societal Transitions and Behavior Change at the Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles Group (since June 2023). Her research and education consistently focus on understanding dietary behavior from a socioecological perspective, with a special emphasis on how individuals interact with their social and physical environments.

Prior to her current role, Raghoebar worked as a postdoctoral researcher at both the Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles Group and the Education and Learning Sciences Group of Wageningen University & Research (September 2020 – June 2023). She obtained her PhD at the CHL Group in March 2021, where here dissertation examined the role of physical cues in the food environment and the underlying psychological processes, especially social norms, that shape healthy and/or sustainable eating behavior.

Raghoebar’s work builds upon the belief that a successful food transition requires behavioral changes among many people. Her research and education focuses on first understanding the socioecological factors that affect individual dietary behaviors, in order to subsequently develop and evaluate interventions that accelerate such a transition towards more healthy and sustainable dietary patterns. Drawing from extensive evidence, her work underscores the necessity of considering social determinants of behavior, emphasizing that human behavior cannot be fully understood in isolation from the social contexts in which they occur.

Raghoebar is involved in different educational activities, including coordinating and lecturing in the course Consumer, Technology and Innovation (YSS31806). She is passionate about sharing her experiences and expertise, therefore she supervises several MSc, BSc and internship students, as well as PhD candidates.

Raghoebar deems it important to make an effort in sharing research practices, as by sharing our work, we increase the chance that our work is read, and in turn, we increase the chance of making a societal impact. A prime example is her Instagram account ‘Dr. ArtSci’, where she combines her passion for art and science. See the illustration on this page as an example, recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Appetite. Raghoebar has the ambition to make science more visual, as people understand and remember information better if it is offered both textually and visually.
