Biography

I am Professor of “Public governance and climate change adaptation” at Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands. I am particularly interested in how state and non-state actors deal with emerging boundary spanning policy problems that crosscut spatial, temporal and administrative systems, particularly climate change impacts and risks. I have a particular fascination for the governance challenges these problems present, how these actors respond, and whether progress is being made to reduce risks. Most of my work is comparative in nature, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.

I have published over 100 scientific publications on climate change and public policy and was ranked 4th globally (2021) based all publications every published in the field of climate change adaptation. I was involved in several global and regional assessments, including the UNEP Adaptation GAP report (2017/2022), IPCC AR6 WG2 as Coordinating Lead Author (2018-2022), and the first European Union Climate Risk Assessment (2022-2024) where I led a chapter on Social Justice and Cohesion. I am  member of the Scientific Committee of the UN World Adaptation Science Program (WASP) and received several prestigious personal research grants from the Dutch Scientific Research Council to study (the politics of) tracking climate change adaptation (NWO-VENI and NWO-VIDI). I am editor for Regional Environmental Change and Climatic Change.
