Biography
As a broadly interested biologist and ecologist I specialize in the distribution, ecology, life history, and evolution of (non-native) marine and freshwater species, using both taxonomic and molecular approaches.
Fieldwork in the Netherlands, Ireland, France, Denmark, and Sweden during theses and periodic work have shown me insights into (non-native) marine species distribution throughout nature and aquaculture networks where species were identified using both taxonomic and molecular methods. In addition I like to learn more of taxonomic species identification, illustration, and application and optimization of molecular assessment methods. My thesis resulted in my first scientific paper on the establishment of non-native marine species.
Currently, I work as an Education/Research officer on various projects such as whole genome sequencing and eDNA projects using Oxford Nanopore Technologies' PromethION and MinION sequencers.
Since recently I am a core member of the team Genetic Fish Atlas of the Netherlands which aims to construct genomic data of of each fish species in the Netherlands for effective monitoring and managing of species. As of April 2026 I will start my PhD on this project aiming to combine genetic data to applied management of fish species in the Netherlands.
Lastly, diving and underwater photography as a hobby allow me to see the species in their natural environment (instead of out of the water for sampling ;) ).
