Financing a nature-positive food system

About this expertise

In short
  • Assessing financial risks
  • Identifying nature-positive opportunities
  • Network of financial institutions
  • Collaboration with policymakers

Finance is both affected by and contributes to nature-related risks. Wageningen University & Research supports financial institutions in understanding these risks and developing strategies that promote nature-positive outcomes, especially within food systems. Our expertise bridges biodiversity science with practical, collaborative solutions to support the shift towards sustainable finance.

Approach

Finance plays a key role in guiding economies towards nature-positive outcomes. Wageningen University & Research provides financial actors with scientific insights to assess biodiversity risks and identify sustainable investment opportunities. Together, we develop tools, metrics, and methods that embed the value of nature into financial analysis, investment portfolios, and policy frameworks.

Through partnerships and applied research, we help financial institutions set and implement biodiversity targets, manage nature-related risks, and meet new regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). Our aim is to turn complex ecological data into practical insights that support investment decisions and societal impact.

We are part of a large Public-Private Partnership with six financial sector partners to create a cutting-edge methodology for assessing biodiversity impacts. This approach combines science-based biodiversity and financial scenarios using advanced economic models (such as MAGNET) to estimate the economic effects of biodiversity loss at national and sector levels.
