Student story June

- Master's in Geo-information Science

“In Wageningen, it’s not just about learning the technology, but we use geo-data to solve real-world challenges.”
"During my exchange in Australia, I discovered GIS for the first time. Suddenly, everything clicked. I could combine data, maps, and environmental and societal questions into something meaningful. That’s when I knew I wanted to start with this programme in Wageningen”, explains Master student June (25 years) on why she is studying Geo-Information Science.
From Delft to Wageningen / Finding this programme
“During my bachelor's in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management at Delft University of Technology, I enjoyed working with data and technical subjects. This is in line with my favourite subjects in high school, which consisted of mathematics and social studies. While studying in Melbourne, I followed courses in spatial analysis and sustainability. I enjoyed these courses a lot, so that is why I started looking for a master’s that would let me combine those interests. Back in the Netherlands, I realised that most options were very technical and focused on how to build or process data. What attracted me to Wageningen was that this programme is much more applied. It has a balance between theory and practice. Here, we use geo-information to solve real-world problems.”
Open atmosphere at WUR
“What really stands out to me at WUR is the atmosphere. It’s personal and open, and the teachers are genuinely involved with the students. Everyone here is approachable, and people really help each other out. In the beginning, I struggled with the increased number of contact hours. But this allows me to have the evenings and weekends off and have actual free time.”
Ambitions for impact
“For my thesis, I’m analysing how the habitat of an endangered fish species in India could be expanded using GIS tools. It’s a hands-on project with a real partner organisation, which makes it feel meaningful. I even plan to travel there to see the area myself. For internship options, I think of a consultancy firm, as I enjoyed the project-based work during courses. For example, during the Academic Consultancy Training, we worked with a real company, which gave me a taste of what it’s like to apply my GIS knowledge professionally. I would also be interested in a company working on infrastructure or spatial planning, where I can use GIS and where technology and sustainability meet.”
“I really like the open and relaxed people at WUR.”
My advice to future students
“Talk to people, either friends, family or teachers, about what inspires you. You can learn more about your motivation from those conversations. If I had followed logic, I would have chosen Delft over Wageningen for my master's. But by trusting my intuition and going for the more applied approach here at the WUR, I made the right decision.“
