Biobased Chemistry & Technology

Yellow liquid in chemical laboratory closeup

Biobased Chemistry & Technology, led by Harry Bitter, wants to help build a circular, biobased economy by using what nature provides. The researchers develop smart and sustainable ways to turn natural, renewable resources into useful products such as chemicals, materials and fuels. They combine chemistry, modelling and physical chemistry to understand and improve these conversions.

Chair Holder

Harry Bitter is Chair of the Biobased Chemistry & Technology group. He explores methods to produce chemicals from biomass and biomass derived feedstocks. ‘Simply put: I make one molecule out of on another’, he explains. However, to do so more efficiently requires an integrated approach combining different fields of expertise. Bitter therefore combines chemical experiments with computational approaches within his group.
