Single-molecule biophysics

Our lab studies DNA-protein interactions on the molecular level. To achieve the necessary high temporal and spatial resolution, we use highly sensitive fluorescence-based techniques such as single-molecule FRET and super-resolution microscopy.

Unlike traditional, ensemble-based experiments that measure the average behaviour of many molecules at once, single-molecule methods allow us to study individual molecules under biological relevant conditions. This helps us uncover differences between molecules, follow dynamic processes, and identify distinct sub-populations that would otherwise remain hidden. 


We also work on pushing the technical boundaries of single-molecule fluorescence detection, for example by using nanofluidic devices. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Biochemistry, we apply these advanced tools to study transcriptional regulators and plasma membrane steroid receptors in the plant Arabidopsis.
