Horticulture and Product Physiology

We are the only academic group focused on horticulture in the Netherlands, and we hold a strong position in horticultural research and education. Under the lead of Leo Marcelis, we strive to give the scientific foundation needed for sustainable crop production and high product quality.
Our research
The role of the Horticulture and Product Physiology group is to foster the science of the supply chain for crops produced under controlled environment agriculture (greenhouses and vertical farms). Our focus is on controlled environment agriculture and the post-harvest quality of products produced in greenhouses and vertical farms. Responses of physiological processes to the environment are studied aiming to predict and control the phenotype of the plant and plant products.

Education

Education by Horticulture and Product Physiology
The Horticulture and Product Physiology group plays an important role in the education and training of future executives in the horticultural sector. Our group contributes to several BSc and MSc programmes, with courses like Vertical Farming and Product Quality Measurements & Analysis. Additionally, we offer the opportunity for a BSc or MSc thesis or internship as well as for a PhD-position, and provide courses for professionals.
Publications & Projects
We focus our research on controlled environment agriculture and the post-harvest quality of products produced in greenhouses and vertical farms. We publish the results of this research on a regular basis in scientific journals, professional journals, scientific and popular books, and proceedings.
Chair Holder
Leo Marcelis is professor and chair of the Horticulture and Product Physiology group. He sees it as his mission, together with his research team, to not only conduct high quality fundamental research, but also give high quality education to students, and that the research and education contribute to sustainably feeding the world with healthy high-quality products.
