Are you an international student at Wageningen University & Research and would you like to learn to speak Dutch with your fellow students and lecturers, or have a simple conversation with your neighbors? Do you also want to learn something about what exactly is typically Dutch, both inside and outside the university walls? Then our Social Dutch courses are perfect for you.

Who is this course suitable for?

Target group

This course is for bachelor's and master's students at Wageningen University & Research who have little or no knowledge of Dutch and want to learn it quickly.

If you are a native German speaker, we offer you the opportunity to enroll directly in Social Dutch 2, provided you study chapters 1 through 5 of the course book beforehand.

What will you learn?

Content and approach

From A0 to A1

This course will help you reach language level A1. The main goal of this course is to learn to communicate in Dutch in simple, everyday situations.

After completing this course, you can continue learning Dutch with our Social Dutch 2 or the intensive summer course Social Dutch 2 (level: A1). Learn more about the language levels (CEFR).

Approach
The emphasis is on oral communication, but reading, listening, and writing skills are also covered. Dutch is spoken as much as possible in class, with English as the supporting language. You'll also learn more about Dutch culture.

What will the course cover?

After this course you will be able to:

  • Introduce yourself/someone else;
  • Say where you're from;
  • Ask where someone is from;
  • Spell your name, address, and town;
  • Ask and tell how you're doing;
  • Ask and tell what you're studying;
  • Tell about your hobbies;
  • Invite someone over;
  • Say what you like/don't like;
  • Ask what someone enjoys doing;
  • Tell about your family;
  • Describe someone's character and appearance;
  • Tell about activities you do during the day;
  • Ask and tell what time it is;
  • Ask and tell when something is happening;
  • Make appointments;
  • Have a conversation in a shop;
  • Ask and tell where people/things are;
  • Ask about the price of things.

After this course you will know:

  • Numbers up to 100
  • The days of the week
  • The months of the year

Learning grammar is secondary to developing good communication skills and a good vocabulary. Only the basics of grammar will be covered, such as sentence structure, present tense verb conjugation, negation, question structure and pronouns. This course will also cover Dutch pronunciation and interesting aspects of Dutch culture. The lecturer will speak Dutch as much as possible during the course.

Schedule

Before the course begins, all participants will receive a self-study package with exercises to prepare them for the course. All participants are expected to complete these exercises before the course begins. Completing the exercises takes approximately one hour.
