Do you want to learn French for a holiday or for your study or work? Did you take French in school, but it has become a little rusty? French 1 will quickly help you get back on track! The course focuses on practical skills and introduces you to French culture.

Who is this course suitable for?

Target group

French 1 is a beginners' course and is intended for anyone who has no knowledge of French and wants to quickly acquire a solid foundation in the language. The maximum number of participants per group is 16.

Did you have French as a subject in secondary school (HAVO/VWO) or have you gained knowledge of the French language in some other way? If so, you may be able to start French 2 straight away. You do have to complete an intake (free of charge). This consists of a short telephone conversation with the teacher. If you would like to book an intake, email your telephone number to into@wur.nl.

What will you learn?

Content and approach

Van A0 naar A1

This course will help you reach A1 language level. After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • understand simple words, expressions, and sentences in French;
  • ask and answer simple, short questions;
  • follow a simple conversation;
  • write simple, short sentences about personal matters.

After completing this course, you can continue learning French with our French 2 course (level: on the way to A2). Read more about the language levels (CEFR).

Approach
The emphasis is on oral communication, but reading, listening, and writing skills are also covered. French is spoken as much as possible in class, with English as the supporting language. You'll also learn more about French culture.

What do the classes cover?

Skills

  • Introducing yourself: name, address, nationality, languages spoken, family, hobbies, study
  • Counting to 100
  • Asking questions/becoming acquainted; describing a house/neighbourhood/city
  • Talking about habits and preferences
  • Telling the time

Grammar

In this French 1 course, we cover a range of grammar topics, including:

  • Personal pronouns
  • Pronunciation, intonation
  • Cardinal and ordinal numbers
  • Regular verbs that end in ER
  • Irregular verbs: être, avoir, faire, aller
  • Negation
  • Adjectives
  • Indicating time and days, indicating frequency
  • Prepositions
