Professor/Chairholder Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics

The Executive Board of Wageningen University & Research has appointed Dr. Micha Werner as International Education Professor of Drought Resilience with the Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics group as of 1 March 2026. Through this appointment he will help strengthen the collaboration between IHE Delft Institute of Water Education and Wageningen University, jointly contributing to research and education towards building resilience to the increasingly variable and changing climate.

In his work, Micha focuses on drought, a climate extreme that challenges society and ecosystems, not just due to the changing climate but also due to the increasing pressure on water resources and human influences on the water cycle. Central to his research are how our understanding drought, low flows and water scarcity can help build resilience through planning and preparing for when droughts happen, and through adapting to reduce the risks droughts have. He enjoys working with both scientists and practitioners across disciplines to increase the impact science has and to ensure research responds to the science needs of society.

Micha Werner

Micha Werner studied at Delft University of Technology, where after obtaining his Master’s degree he joined Deltares, where he worked for 26 years. There he worked with hydrological services and water managers across the world in advancing the forecasting of floods, droughts and water resources availability. In parallel to working at Deltares he undertook his doctoral research and then joined IHE Delft in 2007. First working part-time, he gradually transitioned to a full-time position in 2021.

At IHE Delft he works with students, researchers, organisations and communities from the Americas, Africa, Asia as well as Europe and the Netherlands to address the challenges of drought and water scarcity, which he aims to develop further and strengthen through the collaboration between IHE Delft and Wageningen University.
