Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics Group

The Hydrology and Environment Hydraulics chair group aims to advance fundamental understanding and prediction of hydrological processes in river basins, aquifers, and deltas in support of water management.

Resources

WaterTechLab

We operate a laboratory for research on water flow and transport of particles such as sediment and microplastics, as part of the WaterTechLab. It houses four flumes of different sizes. Two of these flumes can recirculate both fresh and salt water, including particle transport under controlled conditions. The facility is equipped with high-end instruments for measuring flow characteristics and analysing particle transport, some of which can also be used for field studies. In addition, a rainfall-runoff simulator allows researchers to recreate realistic field conditions for studying water and sediment transport.

Education

Education by this Chair Group

At the Chair Groups of Wageningen University, we are very passionate about teaching. Our teaching staff is involved in multiple courses on BSc and MSc level for different study programs.

Our courses include aspects of various sciences. In addition, we offer courses that focus on training academic skills, such as writing and debating skills.

Quote
"Our teaching is rooted in earth and environmental sciences, with connections to engineering."

Publications & Projects

The fundamental research at Wageningen University & Research is conducted by chair groups. Each chair group, under leadership of a professor, has its own area of expertise. All chair groups share a common research domain: healthy food and living environment. Wageningen University & Research is comprised of one faculty that is divided into five departments.

Projects of this Chair Group cover various topics in its own area of expertise. Outcomes of these studies are regularly published in scientific journals. You can find all publications and projects in Wageningen Library.

Chairholder

Martine van der Ploeg is chair of Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics. The purpose of Martine's research is to unravel biophysical landscape processes and connect these with landscape ecosystem functions through collaboration with different scientific disciplines to enable better use and protection of soil and water resources.
