- Fast analysis & data processing
- Accelerated breeding research
The Netherlands Plant Eco-phenotyping Centre (NPEC) is a state-of-the-art research infrastructure for advanced plant phenotyping. Here, researchers and businesses can use cutting-edge technology to analyse genetic interactions between plants and their environment in unprecedented detail. NPEC supports the development of sustainable, climate-resilient crops and contributes to future food security.
What can you do at NPEC?
At NPEC, companies and research organisations can run large-scale experiments to measure plant performance under a wide range of conditions. One module includes dedicated climate chambers where thousands of plants can be grown simultaneously under tightly controlled conditions. This allows rapid insights into how different varieties respond to variations in temperature, light, humidity, and nutrients.
In the high-tech greenhouse, equipped with transport systems, sensors, and cameras, plants are automatically scanned in colour and 3D. Traits such as stem length, leaf size, and colour are measured, alongside highly precise assessments of photosynthetic efficiency.
NPEC also enables field phenotyping. Using drones and a mobile platform – the TraitSeeker – fitted with RGB, thermal, 3D, and hyperspectral cameras, crop trials can be mapped from above. These advanced measurement tools allow promising varieties to be identified more quickly, significantly accelerating breeding and product development.
