About WIAS

Graduate School WIAS is one of six Graduate Schools at Wageningen University that host the Wageningen University PhD programme. WIAS provides education and training and supports early stage researchers in their development into independent scientists. To support our academic community WIAS offers talent programmes for potential PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows and research fellowships to strengthen international collaborations.

WIAS Strategy

The mission of WIAS is to improve our understanding of animals, their biology and various roles for humankind through fundamental and applied research and training of early-stage researchers (PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers).

WIAS aims to be a leading graduate school in the domain of fundamental and applied animal science and biology. WIAS investigates the biological mechanisms of animal functioning in an evolutionary and ecological context at multiple levels, from the molecule to ecosystems, and contributes to farming methods that are environmentally sustainable, animal friendly, safe for the health of humans and animals, economically viable and socially acceptable. WIAS strengthens the quality of our PhD training with a tailormade PhD research programme to support PhD candidates as well as postdoctoral researchers.

WIAS is the only graduate school in the Netherlands integrating all disciplines of animal biology, including fundamental and applied research. WIAS was established on 25 May, 1993.

The objective of WIAS is to train PhD candidates to become professionally skilled animal scientists with strong theoretical background. We aim to reach this goal by offering advanced education, opportunities for reflection on the scientific profession, and by giving PhD candidates the opportunity to communicate their research to the national and international scientific community.

WIAS enhances, supports and monitors the progress and quality of the PhD candidate programme and safeguards and monitors the quality of the research from early-stage researchers.

Research

WIAS research contributes to the understanding the biology of animals, their ecology and to contribute to environmentally sustainable animal production systems, where animal health and welfare are guiding principles. It focuses on the performance of animals in nature and in food production systems and on transforming the latter systems to become more nature inclusive, climate smart, healthy, and circular (terrestrial and aquatic). In order to achieve this, WIAS researchers investigate the biological mechanisms of animals functioning in an evolutionary and ecological context at multiple levels, from molecule to individuals, their natural environment and (production) system.

WIAS focusses on three interrelated, partially overlapping focus areas. 1. Animal welfare in sustainable food systems; 2. Human and animal health in mutual interaction; 3. Animals in biodiversity and ecosystems. The three focus areas address different aspects of the basic functioning of animals, animal and human health, animal ecology, animal welfare and resilience and the transition of animal production chains towards sustainable food systems. The topics within the focus areas are mutually interwoven, such that each topic is supported by the knowledge developed in the other two areas.

Collaborations

WIAS stimulates collaboration across chair groups, not only within a single focus area but also across focus areas, on key questions requiring interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. We emphasise the alignment and complementarity between these areas as this is where many new insights and applications are generated by pursuing an integrated approach, with the aim of contributing to the major societal challenges within our domain.
To achieve these aims, WIAS needs powerful national and international partnerships. This is why we collaborate with leading universities and research institutes in our domain. We also connect with government agencies, public bodies, industry and NGOs at both the national and international level as future employers of our alumni and key stakeholders in our research.

Within Wageningen University & Research, we collaborate with other graduate schools and research institutes to tackle interdisciplinary cross-domain challenges. The offices of the Wageningen Graduate Schools collaborate to enable an efficient workflow and fully exploit the opportunities that these schools collectively offer in the training of early-stage researchers at Wageningen University.

Governance

WIAS board

The WIAS Board is responsible for deciding on the strategy of the research and education programme of the graduate school. The board makes the framework wherein the scientific director can implement his policy and decides on proposals put forward by the WIAS office. The WIAS director and executive secretary prepare and attend the meetings.

The Board consists of 3 (associated) professors of the chair groups associated with WIAS, a representative of the WIAS PhD council (WAPS) and an external board member.

Current composition:

Scientific director and WIAS office

The scientific director (Prof. Marc Naguib) and executive staff (WIAS office) are responsible for the execution of the research and education programme. They develop policy and procedures related to the WIAS PhD programme within the framework set by the Board. The scientific director represents WIAS inside and outside Wageningen University.

PhD candidates who face problems during their PhD programme can contact WIAS PhD advisors for confidential advise.

WIAS Education Committee

The WIAS Education Committee (EC) advises the WIAS office on the PhD training programme. The committee evaluates the PhD courses organised by WIAS and provides input and advice concerning PhD training within WIAS. The EC consists of staff members, PhD candidates and a Postdoctoral researcher.

Current composition:

WIAS Research Committee

The WIAS Research Committee (RC) advises the WIAS office on the research strategy and programme. The committee evaluates the PhD project proposals and PhD literature surveys, based on peer review reports. They also advise on the selection of WIAS and WGS grant applications, possible external speakers, strategic research themes and multidisciplinary workshops. The RC consists of six staff members, recruited from the WIAS-associated assistant and associate professors.

Current composition:

PhD council

The WIAS Associated PhD students (WAPS), WIAS PhD council, strives for a good education programme, contributes to future research plans, and facilitates contacts between WIAS PhD candidates. They monitor and act upon internal and external developments that might affect WIAS PhD candidates.

The WAPS acts in the interest of all WIAS PhD candidates by participating in the WIAS Education Committee, Wageningen Doctoral Council and the WIAS board.

Participating chair groups

WIAS combines the research of thirteen chair groups of Wageningen University within the domain of animal sciences. We focus on three interrelated, partially overlapping focus areas: 1) Animal welfare in sustainable food system; 2) Human and animal health in mutual interaction and 3) Animals in biodiversity and ecosystems.
