Nature-positive food systems

About this expertise
In short- Fundamental system changes in society
- Connecting transitions and disciplines
- Innovation from local to structural levels
- Fostering collaboration and dialogue
Nature-positive food systems aim to transform food production and consumption in ways that restore biodiversity, strengthen local communities, and create sustainable value across the entire food chain.
At Wageningen University & Research, we connect agroecological knowledge with governance, finance, and learning to enable biodiversity-positive food system transformations. Building on WUR’s strategic investment theme (2022–2024) and the Mansholt Lecture on this topic, our research brings together scientists, policymakers, the private sector, and civil society to scale up nature-positive practices from local to global levels. Within ESG, we contribute to EU initiatives such as the Agroecology Partnership, Living Labs, and Research Infrastructures, and explore how landscape approaches and global value chains can reinforce each other. By integrating biodiversity on farms and in landscapes with sustainable diets, finance, and trade, we help partners shape resilient, regenerative food systems that benefit both nature and society.
