Animal housing facilities for infectious disease research

Good to know
In short- From group housing to individual or mixed-group set-ups
- Operating room is available for complex procedures
- Specialised animal models
- Focus on reduction of animal testing
- Full AAALAC accreditation
Within the bioveterinary research domain, our animal housing facilities provide flexible, high-quality accommodation for a wide range of species in diverse experimental settings. Designed to advance infectious-disease research, the facilities meet strict biosafety, animal-welfare and containment standards.
What research is conducted in the animal housing facilities?
Our modular housing units allow in vivo experiments with various species and group configurations. Multipurpose pens can be tailored to specific experimental needs – from group housing to individual or mixed-group set-ups.
We host livestock such as cattle, pigs and poultry, as well as goats or calves and small animals including mice and other rodents. These facilities support infection models under the required biosafety levels and are seamlessly integrated with diagnostics, pathology and immunology laboratories, creating a complete research pipeline from in vivo work to data analysis.
Customised CRO solutions
Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to provide tailor-made contract research (CRO) solutions. We continuously innovate to remain at the forefront of animal research. Recent developments include the integration of real-time sensor technology for animal-health monitoring, microsampling techniques and machine-learning analysis of audio-visual data.

Facilities of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research
Who is this facility for?
Our animal facilities support researchers, universities, government agencies and industrial partners who need flexible, high-quality housing for infectious disease, vaccine development or pathology studies.
The facilities also accomodate internal bioveterinary research programmes requiring controlled experimental environments.
More information
Thanks to our adaptable animal housing, a wide variety of experimental set-ups can be designed – from small-scale studies to large-group trials. A fully equipped operating room is available for complex procedures, such as producing caesarean-derived, colostrum-deprived (CDCD) calves or piglets.
One of WBVR’s unique strengths is the availability of specialised animal models for infectious disease research.
Every model we build follows the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. This means using fewer animals while increasing data quality and reliability. For our partners, this approach translates into validated insights, predictive models and efficient experimental designs that accelerate innovation and product development.
We are committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in all animal studies. Our independent ethics committee reviews each project in accordance with Dutch legislation on animal testing, ensuring that every experiment is scientifically justified and ethically sound.
We hold full AAALAC accreditation, guaranteeing the highest standards of animal care and welfare – for both animals and staff.
Our dedicated team of specialists ensures optimal conditions in well-maintained and carefully monitored facilities.
