Introduction

Marine mammals such as porpoises, seals and whales are important for marine ecosystems. They are top predators, reflect how healthy the ecosystem is and are often under pressure from human activities. For decades, WUR has been conducting independent research on these species and advises on their protection and sustainable management.

By studying ecology, behaviour and human influences together, we contribute to the protection of marine mammals and the ecosystems they belong to. We track numbers, distribution and trends with flight and ship surveys, drones and acoustic methods. With long-term monitoring, we are creating a unique database that provides insights into changes in populations.

We study how marine mammals live, forage, reproduce and migrate. With telemetry (satellite and GPS transmitters) and observations, we gain insight into their behaviour, the food webs they are part of and their role in ecosystems.

Shipping, fishery, pollution, offshore activities and wind farm construction affect marine mammals. We study the effects of noise, disturbance, by-catch and habitat alteration. Using models and doing fieldwork, we calculate risks.

WUR provides scientific evidence for policy and management within and outside the Netherlands. We advise on conservation measures, Natura 2000 areas, marine strategies and impact studies. In doing so, we work closely with Ministries, water managers, international research networks and social organisations.
