Food Item Ontology (FIO) – A single model for integrated food data

The benefits
In short- Combines diverse data sources into a single consistent data structure
- Increases the reliability of analyses thanks to standardised definitions
- Supports the development of innovative health and sustainability apps
- Accelerates research with directly applicable, machine-readable knowledge
- Open source and easy to integrate into existing systems
The Food Item Ontology (FIO) links various food databases and knowledge sources, enabling organisations to use reliable, uniform and usable information about food products.
About Food Item Ontology
The development of digital applications for healthier and more sustainable food is growing rapidly. These applications need to combine data from different sources, such as nutritional values, sustainability indicators and product characteristics. However, these sources are often difficult to compare or differ in structure and terminology.
Wageningen Food & Biobased Research developed the Food Item Ontology (FIO) to solve this challenge. FIO offers a single, uniform, open source ontology that links data sources to the food items they relate to. This makes it easier for organisations, researchers and developers to organise, interpret and apply data within apps, dashboards and analyses.
FIO is suitable for anyone who develops data-driven food innovations, such as app developers, governments, retailers and researchers. The ontology is ready to use and can be expanded to suit your own needs.
