Sustainability impact assessments

About this expertise
In short- Throughout supply chains
- Assess risks & opportunities
- Holistic approach
- Targeted interventions
Wageningen University & Research supports agri-food companies in achieving measurable sustainability impact throughout their supply chains. Using a holistic, science-based approach, we balance social, environmental, and economic impacts. By assessing performance, identifying risks and opportunities, and guiding continuous improvement, we help businesses make their operations more sustainable.
Sustainable farm input use & biodiversity
We analyse the economic and sustainability effects of current farm input strategies and compare them with alternatives, such as new seeds or adjusted farm management practices. Farming areas are segmented using environmental, economic and social data to define expected changes and farmers’ needs, while policy impacts are modelled from the farm to global level.
Agri commodities & sustainable landscapes
Agricultural trade flows are scanned to identify sustainability risks and impact hotspots. We design targeted interventions for high-impact areas at both production and landscape scale, and evaluate how policy can accelerate sustainable transitions.
Food & beverage processors & sustainable products
For food and beverage processors, we assess sustainability baselines and provide clear improvement roadmaps, including interventions to improve working conditions and reduce carbon emissions. These options are tested in advance for effectiveness, supported by cost-benefit analyses and stakeholder engagement. We monitor results and conduct independent evaluations to ensure long-term impact.
“We think it is great when WUR’s research can help design the way forward. It is great when science and practice interact with each other”
