ACRRES is the national applied centre for green raw materials and sustainable energy in agriculture. It brings together businesses, public authorities and researchers to develop practical innovations. 

We apply circular technologies - such as insect and algae cultivation and biorefinery - to make optimal use of agricultural by-products and accelerate the transition to a green economy. We also explore and test sustainable energy systems for the agricultural sector, ranging from solar and wind power to hydrogen, storage solutions and renewable gas. ACRRES offers extensive research facilities and is part of the WUR regional site in Lelystad, with 1,200 hectares of practical farmland.

ACRRES - Agri-PV (agrivoltaics) facility

At the ACRRES Agrivoltaics facilities, we explore how farming and solar energy production can be combined on the same plot of land (multifunctional land use). We test how crops grow beneath or between solar panels, and how light, temperature and water use affect crop growth and soil conditions. Agrivoltaics is also known as agri-PV.

The ACRRES aquatic biomass facility focuses on developing new technologies and applications involving algae, aquatic plants and other aquatic organisms. By cultivating these organisms on residual streams, we turn waste into valuable, high-quality products and contribute to a circular bioeconomy.

The ACRRES biorefinery and anaerobic digestion facility focuses on the separation and valorisation of biomass into high-value feedstocks and products. In our test and development facility, we collaborate with industry partners to advance innovations from lab to pilot and demonstration scale.

The ACRRES facility for insect larvae and compost worms focuses on developing new technologies and applications involving these organisms. By breeding insect larvae and compost worms on residual streams, we convert organic waste into high-value products and contribute to a circular bioeconomy.

ACRRES Switch is the test facility of Wageningen University & Research and TNO where solar and wind energy are combined with battery and hydrogen storage. The facility explores how renewable energy can be smartly integrated into the electricity grid.

Wind Test Site Lelystad is the wind turbine testing facility of the Application Centre for Renewable Resources and Energy (ACRRES). Here, wind turbines are tested under real-life conditions. Located in Flevoland, it offers a unique opportunity within Europe for practical testing and research.
