Human-environment interaction

We monitor and model how human activities reshape the Earth’s surface, so we can better understand their impacts on ecosystems, climate and society, and support more sustainable future development.
Human actions are among the strongest drivers of environmental change. This research theme therefore focuses on concepts, methods and models that explicitly include human influence as part of environmental systems. By measuring and modelling how people move, act and respond to their surroundings, we can better understand human–environment interactions and improve the governance of landscapes and natural resources.
Topics
Our research on human–space interaction includes three main topics:
- Concepts and methods to communicate spatial information and enhance public participation.
- The theory of complex adaptive systems, and the application of agent-based modelling.
- Study of human movement behaviour.
