Introduction

The energy transition requires integrated solutions that connect energy production, use, and infrastructure with nature, landscape, and society.

At Wageningen Environmental Research, we focus on the spatial and ecological dimensions of the energy transition. We investigate how renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and biomass can be integrated into the landscape without compromising biodiversity, water quality, or livability. Our focus is on developing concepts for sustainable energy landscapes that are both technically feasible and socially and ecologically responsible.

We collaborate with governments, businesses, and societal organizations to develop policy instruments and spatial plans that facilitate the energy transition. This includes designing energy landscapes, analyzing the impact of energy infrastructure on ecosystems, and developing models for sustainable energy production and consumption.
