Introduction

Governance for sustainable land use focuses on creating the policies, partnerships, and decision-making systems needed to balance environmental, social, and economic interests across landscapes.

At Wageningen University & Research, we study how governance frameworks can guide the sustainable management of land and landscapes. Our work focuses on the systems, institutions, and collaborative processes that ensure land use supports environmental sustainability, social equity, and long-term economic development. Effective land governance requires coordination among multiple actors — from governments and local communities to the private sector and civil society — and often takes place at the landscape or regional level, beyond individual farms but below the national scale.

Through interdisciplinary research, WUR develops and tests governance approaches that help align interests across administrative and sectoral boundaries. By integrating scientific insights with policy design and stakeholder collaboration, we support partners in developing strategies that promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient land use.
