Introduction

Smart nitrogen management is key to balancing agricultural productivity with ecological conservation, water quality and climate goals.

At Wageningen University & Research, we tackle the nitrogen challenge through multidisciplinary research — in agriculture, nature conservation and economics — and develop solutions to reduce nitrogen emissions and deposition. Our work includes measuring ammonia, nitrogen oxides and nitrate deposition, analysing critical deposition thresholds for nature areas, and designing regional, integrated approaches.

Our approach supports governments, companies and agri-stakeholders in defining nitrogen reduction pathways, selecting technological and organisational measures (e.g., innovative barns, precision farming, manure treatment), and embedding nitrogen considerations within the broader context of climate, water and biodiversity. We thereby help realise sustainable and future-proof land- and nature-use systems.
