Experts at Wageningen University & Research examine the role of the Netherlands as a trading partner, the impact of trade and investment in agriculture and food on different sectors and regions, and how trade can contribute to sustainable development and global food security while minimising negative effects. Our research enables partners to make informed policy and investment decisions.
International trade and investment play a key role in the transition to sustainable and equitable food systems. Wageningen University & Research investigates how trade flows affect the economy, sustainability and food security in the Netherlands, Europe and globally. We support governments, investors, supply chain actors, NGOs and civil society organisations with evidence-based insights into international trade and investment in agriculture and food.
Our research includes the analysis of trade agreements such as Brexit and the EU–Mercosur deal, and the impact of global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. We use a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, including international datasets and advanced economic models such as MAGNET to simulate and assess future scenarios. We also apply participatory approaches such as scenario design, SWOT analyses and foresight studies. By linking data to forward-looking insights, we help policymakers and stakeholders assess risks and opportunities and make well-founded decisions.
