At WUR, publishing Open Access (OA) is the norm. It makes our research freely available to everyone and supports the Open Science goal of sharing knowledge openly. The Library offers support, training and tools to help researchers publish their work Open Access.

Open Access is a publishing model for scholarly communication that makes research information available to readers at no cost, as opposed to the traditional subscription model. Open Access publishing accelerates innovation by making it easier and faster to build on each other’s work. It also ensures equal access to scientific publications. For researchers, Open Access publishing increases the visibility and scientific impact of their work.

The WUR open access policy is committed to making research and knowledge freely available. WUR Library offers guidance and tools to help you make your work openly available, in line with national guidelines and WUR’s Open Access policy.

- Publishing Open Access often comes at no extra costs thanks to national agreements with many publishers. Check the WUR Journal Browser to find applicable deals.
- Open Access boosts your visibility, reach, and potential for real-world impact.
- The Library offers training on publishing Open Access, such as the Library essentials lunch webinars.
Find a reliable publishing platform
Publisher quality varies, whether they offer Open Access or not. The information in our knowledge articles and listed tools & websites will help you find reliable publishers and avoid questionable and predatory publishers. If you have any doubts or concerns, you can always contact the Library's Open Access team.

Tips and tricks
- Use the WUR Journal Browser to select journals that meet basic quality requirements.
- Install Lean Library. When you have installed Lean Library, a warning shows up when you access a hijacked journal's website.
- The Think, Check, Submit initiative can help you identify predatory journals.
- Not all low-quality publishers are predatory; Check the Guide on predatory and questionable publishing practices to identify and avoid also questionable journals.
