About this expertise
In short- Integrated water approach
- Research on contaminants, drought and floods
- Focus on health, ecology and agriculture
- Methods to balance functions and quality
- Guidance for sustainable water supplies
Healthy waters are the foundation of thriving ecosystems, safe food production, and resilient societies.
At Wageningen University & Research, we approach healthy waters from a holistic perspective, integrating water quality, quantity, and ecosystem functions. Our research addresses emerging substances, droughts, floods, and the complex interplay between ecological, public health, and agricultural water needs.
We study water from multiple disciplines — including pathogens and human health, ecological water quality, and water for consumption and food production — and develop methods to balance these functions with the water quality standards required for each purpose. By connecting scientific insights with practical management strategies, we help policymakers, water managers, and industry partners ensure that water resources remain safe, sustainable, and resilient under changing environmental and societal conditions.
