Diagnostics for animal diseases
Within the domain bioveterinary research, we deliver high-quality veterinary diagnostic services for the early detection and control of infectious animal diseases. As the threat of both endemic and notifiable diseases and zoonoses continues to grow, rapid and reliable testing is more important than ever. Diagnostics safeguard animal and public health by preventing the spread of pathogens and supporting effective control measures.
Animal diseases and zoonoses drive demand for accurate and fast diagnostic tools that support evidence-based policymaking, disease surveillance, treatment and export certification.
We provide over 300 accredited tests for a wide range of animal diseases, enabling early detection, research and the development of intervention strategies. Wageningen University & Research hosts the Dutch National Reference Laboratory for many notifiable animal diseases, placing us at the heart of surveillance programmes, outbreak responses, and pandemic preparedness. This work helps the Dutch government to make informed decisions and adapt strategies when needed.
Together with a multidisciplinary team of experts, our unique high-containment laboratories (hBSL3 and vBSL4) create a powerful foundation for rapid responses to infectious diseases. At the same time, we advance innovative diagnostic methods and research into pathogens and prevention. With climate change accelerating the spread of vector-borne diseases, the role of advanced diagnostics is more critical than ever. Diagnostics are not just a scientific discipline, they are a cornerstone of healthy animals, safe food chains, and resilient societies.
